DRUMMING UP INTEREST -- One Thursday each month, David Curry lights four candles in the sanctuary of First Unitarian Universalist Church of Milford. Then things get real loud.
The sanctuary is home to the secular Milford Open Drum Circle. It is just what it sounds like. Once a month, some 15 to 20 people ranging in age from 8 to older than 70 turn up here with drums of all kinds.
Then they play. Irish Bodhrans pick up beats from Latin bongo drums. Skilled drummers lay down clear rhythms that novices can pound their way into. All are welcome to take this easy step up from just tapping your feet.
"Sometimes the drumming can be very energetic and provide an emotional outlet or a tremendous sense of liberation, because it gives you permission to make a lot of noise," says Curry, who founded the circle four years ago. "And sometimes we shift to the other end of the spectrum, and the drumming can be very relaxing, and meditative, and quiet."
Curry, who lives in North Uxbridge, always brings "a whole pile of drums" to share. Regulars also occasionally bring other instruments, such as flutes and didgeridoos, to jam with the circle. "We create music on the spur of the moment," he says. "It's very exciting for people."
The Drum Circle is held 7-9 p.m. the first Thursday of every month at First Unitarian Universalist Church of Milford, 23 Pine St. Admission is free. Call 508-278-3252, or e-mail dmcurry@gis.net.
