DRUMS FOR ONE & ALL
DRUM CIRCLE GUIDELINES
DFOA Drum Circle General Information:
- The circles are open to the public (spreading the word and inviting friends is encouraged)
- Extra drums and percussion instruments are usually available for those who need to borrow
- Though facilitated, the circles are dynamic, adjusting spontaneously to the needs of those attending
DFOA Drum Circles Welcome:
- Anyone interested in hand drumming, percussion or music in general
- Drummers of all skill levels - beginners to advanced
- Drummers of all ages (though we ask that young children not disrupt the circle)
- Dancers of all styles - freestyle, African, belly dance, etc
- Musicians who play wind instruments such as flute, didgeridoo, etc.
DFOA Drum Circles May Include:
- Drumming from African, Middle Eastern, Native American, Latin American and other traditions
- Chanting, singing or wind instrument accompaniment
- Freeform dancing or other body movement
- An open forum for issues relating to drumming, music or spirituality in general
Instruments May Include:
- Primarily hand drums (djembe, dununs, doumbek, congas, bongos, frame drums, etc)
- Percussion instruments (shakers, clave, wood blocks, cowbells, etc)
- Melodic wind instruments (voice, wooden flute, didgeridoo, etc)
All DFOA Drum Circles Aim To Emphasize:
- Sensitivity to group energy, careful listening and appropriate response
- Awareness of cultural diversity and traditions
- The freedom of personal expression and experimentation
- Building community through the connection of music and spirituality
