The monthly FREEDRUM circle is a community gathering for improvisational drumming and dancing that welcomes all ages and skill levels. The event focuses on spontaneous group interaction so that each individual has a say in co-creating the rhythms that everyone plays together. We encourage creativity, imagination and sharing a wide range of personal expression.
Although FREEDRUM is largely "freestyle", Dave Curry offers general facilitation to ensure that everyone is able to have an enjoyable experience, and to provide basic guidance for volume levels, overall vibe, etc. The goal is that everyone in the circle will listen carefully, be respectful and respond appropriately to where the group wants to go as a harmonious unit.
- Bring any kind of hand drum or percussion instrument that works well in a drum circle context
- There are always extra drums available if you need to borrow one for the evening
- Bring any kind of woodwind instrument such as flute or didgeridoo
- Offer up songs or chants or toning or any other kind of vocalizations
- Dance and do any other kind of body movement that the space will allow
- Start any kind of rhythm that you want to share with the group
- Make announcements that might be of interest to the circle
